Hi

We did a start up last year and spent almost all the first year income on marketing. We are now down to 10% including SEO, PPC, PR, Advertising. My gut fee is that in the early stage you need to spend 20% plus to establish a brand. The key thing is in a small business you can not afford to do it all. I would be interested in sharing experiences with others.

Hey Jeff...I howled out loud when I read, "I'm really impressed, it looks like a professional did it." Totally hilarious. I have definitely heard most of them...the "It doesn't make me puke.", is a great rendition of what I've heard, which was, "I kinda like this, or... well... I don't hate it."

The great thing you offered was some tips on the feedback which is helpful. You can always start off with those words, but commonly, because there is a certain subjective element to what we do, the suggestion on what we are looking for as feedback gets lost as soon as the creative hits the table.

Make the logo bigger is certainly the staple comment...however I have noticed a shift to, "make the website (addy) bigger.", which renders the hairs on my neck to stand at attention, just the same. Love the article, I had a good laugh, of course. LOL

Thanks Shannon. You're right about the subjective side. It's definitely hard for folks to get beyond what they like (as opposed to what their client would like). One of the many challenges of the creative process.

Glad you got a chuckle out this, the Say What series of posts is definitely the most fun to write.

Yep, you're absolutely right. But PR folks are all about relationships - it should be easier for them than the rest of us.
